Sinus Surgeries are not always effective. Here’s Why…
Written by Austin Goh on Feb 24th 2020
Each year in the US alone, 365,000 endoscopic sinus surgeries are performed. They are prescribed for ‘Sinus Headaches’ and other acute Sinus problems. But it’s a little known fact that 40% of Malpractice claims are from nose and paranasal sinuses procedures.
Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed through your nose. It’s not pretty. You may hear a crunching sound as some bone is removed.

During the procedure, blood and mucus may rush down the back of your throat.

But why is this outdated procedure still being suggested? It was originally developed when we did not have a deeper understanding of antibacterial or infectious solutions.

What is not commonly known is that even if you have a Sinus Surgery. Your symptoms may reoccur again. Let’s explore why.

1) Surgery can fail to get rid of the existing infection

Sinus surgery works by creating space between your sinuses to allow mucus to drain. The hope is that once the mucus can drain. The infectious environment will subside.

But unfortunately what is not considered is that after surgery you are at a higher risk of infection. Whilst you may have created space, you are encouraging the bacteria and existing infection to thrive in this new environment.

Creating space is good, but it is not addressing the root cause of your bacteria. Unfortunately existing mucus and bacteria is still active and the chances of infection is high.

2) Wrong diagnosis

It was found in a study, that one of the most common reasons that sinus surgeries fail. Is because the initial diagnosis was wrong.

If you have not been properly diagnosed and your issue is because of an obstruction in the nasal area or a mucus disease then a sinus surgery will not be of use.

3) You can redevelop infections if your immune system is weak

This reason stands for most health issues. But ultimately if you have a immune system deficiency and your immune system is not strong. Then not only will the rate of recovery of your surgery be slow. But your body’s inability to get rid of existing infections that were causing the problem will result in your surgery being a failure.

It is not just as simple as removing a nasal polyp or creating some space. Many factors need to be considered when trying to solve your sinusitis issue. Before you choose a solution. It’s important to get a thorough diagnosis.

Once you have a thorough diagnosis then you should carefully consider a holistic option that will address the root cause and get rid of the symptoms.
